Bed sheets thread count explained. Sometimes, less is better.

If you are not part of the linen business is more likely that you are not aware that the industry, the dodgy one, has made you believe that the higher the thread count the better but is not entirely accurate.

First, let’s clarify that threadcount is the measurement of the number of threads per square inch (1”x1”) square piece of fabric. The term TC was originally developed in the USA to differentiate percale (closely woven plain weave fabric), from muslin (loosely woven cotton fabric).

There are several factors that would have to be put in place to support the statement of higher thread count and better quality. Some companies tend to market Egyptian cotton with 1,000 thread count at affordable prices but this is a contradiction because real Egyptian cotton with extra-long fibers is usually expensive because is scarce, which would not allow manufacturers to offer products at a competitive price.

To achieve better manufacturing costs, some lower thread count bed linen fabrics (130TC,150TC, 180TC, 200TC, 250TC, 300TC) are produced using a weaving process that adds two threads instead of one in the weft direction (horizontally). This process produces a fabric that has what is known as “double pick” construction. This reduces the cost of manufacturing but produces a fabric that is inferior in feel and appearance. If you use twisted or double yarns, you double the thread count and you get 400, 500, 600, 800, 1000TC but weaving gets very dense. The double-pick insertion also means companies can use a combination of lower-grade yarns and give the impression of high quality without actually delivering it.

One great example of excellent quality with a higher thread count is our retail line, Bombacio Sunrise Collection of 420 thread count with extra-long staple cotton. It comes in white, ivory, sand, sky blue, and cloud grey to perfectly match the color of your dreams.

What matters the most is how your bedding feels when it comes in contact with your skin, which in our case with our products is something you will always find.
