Combed cotton vs carded cotton

Who says you can’t have “hotel” towels for your home? You can still find high-quality towels that will give you that luxury feel. To pick the right ones you just need to ask a couple of questions about how they are made or just get Garnier-Thiebaut’s combed cotton towels instead and learn from personal experience.

Good towels are all about good cotton and the manufacturing process, allow us to explain. The carding machine is made up of a series of wire-wound cylinders that feature tiny teeth that run in opposite directions cut into them. The cotton fibers are passed through these series of rotating cylinders, with fibers passed from one cylinder to the other where the teeth get fine as the cotton progresses.

A combed cotton towel takes the carded process to a higher level and softens the cotton fibers more, for a softer feel. Fine-toothed combs are used to straighten and align each fiber parallel to the direction of the spinning. The spinning process separates 80% of the most desirable (longer, thinner, more even) fibers from the less desirable (shorter, coarser, less consistent) fibers. This produces a very smooth, very compactly spun yarn which is best suited for weaving. The combed cotton yarn has been combed to separate shorter fibers to make the yarn stronger and softer, and since up to 15% of the volume is removed makes a finer, stronger, higher-quality, and more durable cotton yarn.

Carded cotton is cotton that has been prepared for spinning into thread or yarn. Carding removes tangles in cotton fibers but does not fully align the fibers so they are all going in the same direction. If the carded fiber is spun with most of the fibers going in the direction of spinning, it will produce a more compact, smoother yarn. If it is spun with most of the fibers perpendicular to the direction of the spin, it will produce a fluffier, airier yarn. In this process, they don’t comb the fibers, which is not necessarily a bad thing since it makes them ideal for terry towels (another one of our great products). It creates towels highly absorbent and quick to dry.
